Adsorption of organic molecules may explain growth of newly nucleated clusters and new particle formation

چکیده
[1] New particle formation consists of homogeneous nucleation of thermodynamically stable clusters followed by growth of these clusters to a detectable size. For new particle formation to take place, these clusters need to grow sufficiently fast to escape coagulation with preexisting particles. Previous studies indicated that condensation of low-volatility organic vapor may play an important role in the initial growth of the clusters. However, due to the relatively high vapor pressure and partial molar volume of even highly oxidized organic compounds, the strong Kelvin effect may prevent typical ambient organics from condensing on these small clusters. Here we show that the adsorption of organic molecules onto the surface of clusters, not considered previously, may significantly reduce the saturation ratio required for the condensation of organics to occur and therefore may provide a physicochemical explanation for the enhanced initial growth by condensation of organics despite the strong Kelvin effect. Flux induced growth of atmospheric nano-particles by organic vapors
modynamically stable clusters from trace gas molecules (homogeneous nucleation) followed by growth of these clusters to a detectable size (∼3 nm). Because freshly nucleated clusters are most susceptible to loss due to high rate of coagulation with pre-existing aerosol population, the initial growth rate strongly influences the rate of new particle formation and ambient aerosol population. Where...

The manuscript presents a detailed description of the meteorological and chemical code of Malte – a model to predict new aerosol formation in the lower troposphere. The aerosol dynamics are achieved by the new developed UHMA (University of Helsinki Multicomponent Aerosol Model) code with kinetic limited nucleation as responsible mechanism to form new clusters. First results indicate that the mo...
متن کاملFrom molecular clusters to nanoparticles: second-generation ion-mediated nucleation model
Ions, which are generated in the atmosphere by galactic cosmic rays and other ionization sources, may play an important role in the formation of atmospheric aerosols. In the paper, a new second-generation ion-mediated nucleation (IMN) model is presented. The new model explicitly treats the evaporation of neutral and charged clusters and it describes the evolution of the size spectra and composi...
متن کاملAtmospheric nanoparticles formed from heterogeneous reactions of organics
Atmospheric aerosols directly and indirectly affect the radiative balance of the Earth’s atmosphere1. Nanoparticles are a key component of atmospheric aerosols, growing rapidly under ambient conditions2–4. Organic species are thought to lead to the growth of nanoparticles smaller than 20 nm (refs 5, 6), but the identity of these species and the underlying chemical mechanisms remain elusive. Her...
